The album's third, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet format of previous albums and was a more ferocious, consistent effort with a harder edge than Hydra. The edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the development of the group. Bobby Kimball's growing proficiency was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's work was more precise, sharper, and less derivative than on previous performances.
